This is a very reasonable take.

Yup agreed, and yes I've thought of Drexler before as a comp for him as you mentioned, similar strengths and weaknesses. Amen a better defender and a bit more of a quick twitch athlete (Drexler had the much better dunks though lol).

 

40% from 3 is equal to 60% from 2, we shoot too many twos.

I think he's a much better passer than Marion, and not quite the same level of rebounder. Jump shooting is TBD.

My initial knee-jerk reaction was "he's going to be better than Marion". I had forgotten Marion made it onto 4 All-Star teams and 2 All-NBA. I guess you couldn't complain too much about that level of outcome, but I am still holding onto hope Amen will become a #1 option (or at least something like #1B).

Curious, do you think Amen with the ball in his hands on the perimeter in a halfcourt setting is a positive for his team? Like, relative to a rep from the median guy in that role on a team trying to win. Do you think it is close?

Not asking about the other parts of the game - transition, rebounding, cutting, defense, finishing off-ball. Amen is A+ at those. Just ball in his hands on the perimeter in the halfcourt.

 

Glad we didn't let Patrice O'Neal go full LeBron on us.

 

I'm OK with Amen doing an initial probe to see if the defense is relaxed enough for him to get to the rim or at least get in the paint.

Otherwise, he should give up the ball early to KD or Alpi so they can start an iso since there is so little movement on offense.

I think Amen could shred defenses with passing from up top if the offense had movement and screens to get guys open. We see it every now and then in fast break and "semi" fast break situations.

The problem that happens now is when Amen has the ball on the perimeter, everybody stands around waiting for him to do what is impossible: Penetrate when the defense is set up to stop his penetration. So he's forced to dribble around wasting the shot clock because there is no plan.
