When you work in marketing and 7/8 of your coworkers are women it would career suicide to keep using an antiquated term like "guys" to refer to a group of people. Not to mention very disrespectful.

I’m from the Midwest, it’s always been guys. Hey guys how are things? What are you guys doing?

I’m all for understanding everyone and their feelings, but this stuff just seems out of hand.

 

Not really anything to concern oneself over, language changes over time. It's not like 'guys' has been a thing since forever.

 

I'm from the South and it always used to be "Hey N***er". Not being able to do that just seems to be getting out of hand.

 

Folks was a term used commonly 20-30 years ago.

Everyone is the term I use at work or in a more laced up crowd.

******* is what I use with people at my house, my friends, or in Walmart.

 

My good old boy Csuite team have started with “Gents”, and it’s super annoying.

Honest question, is "hey folks" fine, or does it also offend someone?

 

While I don't actively go out of my way to avoid saying "guys" in a mixed setting...thinking back it was very rare that I did it. I usually say "ya'll" or "folks" or something. Saying "guys" in a mixed setting just seemed a bit weird to me I suppose.

That said, I don't think this is that big of a deal, at least not among people currently older than 30 or so. I've never met a woman that was openly bothered or offended by it and heck even some women say "guys" in mixed settings. Granted, I'm late Gen X and X-ers and older millennials are generally more chill and not uptight about stuff like this, compared to Gen Z. I think rural folks in certain parts of the US are also generally more lax about this than suburban/urban ones. In professional settings, company culture also plays a role here.

Many things evolve generationally, and language is no exception. That is one reason why it's good to be cognizant and respectful of evolving social norms (within reason) if you want to have a long career with little drama, particularly if you work in a team environment and/or interact directly with clients, customers or consumers.

 

My wife is British and we lived in London for a few years. Since my days in Houston, I say y'all a lot. People just look at me and (rightfully) think I am a weirdo Kraut.

I also say "feeder road", and that doesn't even work in other parts of the US.

Well if you are in a team full of guys and gals, u should greet them as so. It's not that hard to say hey guys and gals

It's not woke, it's common sense.

I was curious about your question, and interestingly enough it doesn't have an offensive connotation.

I don't really like the term, it is stale IMO and often used by pandering politicians - but it isn't offensive.

 

Some in the LGBTQ+ community are offended by terms like "guys and gals" because they make a reference to gender.
The push is to use terms like "people", "folks", "everyone"

Having said that, I have never had someone come and complain because of the the use of the term "guys and gals".

I have had some women complain about the use of the term guys.

I think we should all just do our best to adjust as the culture changes.
