Nobody should ever use the word in any context.

Without googling it, I suspect its origins are from the river Niger, the main river in West Africa and which runs through Nigeria.

It is derived from words for black used in Romance languages such as the Spanish negro and the French nègre from the original Latin nigrum. Originally it was neger, negar, or negur (depending on where in the UK). It was another way of saying black. The word black comes into English from Germanic languages. black | Search Online Etymology Dictionary (etymonline.com)

It only bothers me if people are directing it as a slur against Black people and are using it in a manner that could normalize its usage as a slur towards Black people. The latter is where the real debate over its usage happens. People have different thresholds for what counts as normalizing its usage. When with a group of people where you don't have a good handle on what that threshold might be, or when making comments that may be made public to a wider audience, best to just avoid using it altogether.

Chris Pratt could use the N word and everyone would thank him because he would say it in a way that conveyed the grace of his being to each person on a spiritual, deeply personal level.

I'm not sure everyone would thank him, there are people that could potentially get offended by it. But if he did use the word I'm sure he is using it with the best of intentions and no ill will towards whom he is saying it to.
