To keep this non D&D...a good starting point is to not vote for people who want to restrict your rights.

Just vote. If you consider that 2018 was our highest midterm voting turnout in the modern era with 49%, it means someone is getting elected with as little as 24.6% of total eligible votes. That also means they only have to appeal to and appease 24.6% of voters, creating a more ideological and partisan politics. Throw in a couple of third party candidates and it could be as little as 20% or 22%. In those low percentages, an interest group that can claim they represent, say, 3% of total voters who voted (which is 1/7 or 1/8 of the winning total) which gives them a disproportionate influence on a politician's positions and votes. Not voting empowers special interests. If 100% of eligible voters voted, politicians would have to appeal to at least 50.1%, which would naturally make our politics a bit more moderate and less confrontational while greatly reducing the importance of special interest groups. So vote. Even if you know nothing about candidates. The more votes the better. And really, it's one of two civic responsibilities asked of us as Americans, with the other being jury duty.
