If Abbott reinstates a mask mandate it'll enrage the right. If he continues to do nothing this number is going to keep climbing. This is going to be an issue in the Governors race. Especially if Texas surpasses California in total deaths.

Texas just passed New York in COVID-19 deaths, despite once trailing by 29,000. Here's how.

Texas has passed New York to become the state with the second-most COVID-19 deaths, a feat experts say was driven by an inability to control transmission of the virus here.

Texas reached the milestone Wednesday, hitting 53,275 deaths, despite trailing New York by more than 29,000 fatalities last summer. Since then, though Texas is 54 percent more populous, more than twice as many Texans as New Yorkers have succumbed to COVID-19. California, the most populous state, leads the nation with 64,372 virus deaths...

By June 30 of last year, as the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic swept through the United States, New York tallied 31,775 virus deaths. Texas had just 2,481...

Over next 13 months, however, the states reversed roles. New York kept restrictions and mask rules in place longer and consistently maintained a lower positivity rate than Texas. In contrast, Texas endured two surges of the virus and is in the early stages of a third, as the Delta variant now sweeps the country as a fourth wave of the virus...

The Delta variant has caused a third COVID-19 surge in Texas, with the highest hospitalization numbers since March. The Houston region alone had more COVID-19 patients admitted than 47 states.

The statewide positivity rate hit 15 percent on Wednesday, which it had only done during the two previous surges. An increase in deaths predictably has followed. The 65 fatalities reported Thursday was the highest daily tally since mid-May.

New York has seen a positivity rate increase in July also, but only to 2.5 percent. No day has exceeded 12 deaths. Of all eligible New Yorkers, 57 percent are fully vaccinated compared to 44 percent of Texans, according to the CDC.

Cuomo has issued no virus restrictions. Abbott issued a new COVID-19 executive order Thursday; it barred mayors and county judges from issuing any restrictions of their own.
