I was watching this last night and the only thing I could think was... damn, that's not very fast by "world" standards. You want somebody big that ran fast? Ben Johnson! lol.
Tyreek is the only NFL player I've heard of running a sub 10 second 100 meter -- I think 9.97 on the junior Olympic team.
This is the video I watched last night with Ato Bolden commentating. Bolden was impressed he ran as fast as he did with as big a body as he has, and had nothing but praise for his effort. It's an 9-minute video, but if you watch after, there's an interview with Metcalf and commentary that's worth listening to. But this does give you an idea of how fast world-class athletes are. The winning time was only 10.11. Those times would get destroyed by the elite Olympic times. Unreal.
Wonder how many 100ths the gold cross cost him, LOL. (Not throwing shade, just wondering physically!)
Along the same lines, any of you guys remember these races back in the day (former Houston Oiler legend in this edition, too). Back when NFL and track guys competed :
Who says that 80s/90s athletes weren’t fast lol. I think my favorite thing is every interview was respectful to their opponent.
This is all reminding me of Willie Gault from the 85' Bears. That dude had some world class speed. I think he is still doing old folks races for the 100. There's two races because of a false start, one @1:14 the other @4:46 (9.83 seconds on the 100y ain't bad)
Gault got beat by Woodson in the 60 in the video I posted, but Gault was a legitimate world-class sprinter. Woodson was a hell of a sprinter, too. In your video, I knew Vince Coleman was fast, but didn't think he'd be able to beat Renaldo Nehemiah. And Gault in the 100? I think Ron Brown would be one of the few in the NFL at that time who could beat him. Maybe Darrell Green, too. That's some crazy speed. I just looked up what you said about Gault. What in the hell? That dude was still running in the 10's at over 50 years of age. Looks like he hit a wall when he hit around 58 years old. He's "only" running in the 11's. : https://www.inquirer.com/philly/spo...masters-sprinter-phil-anastasia-20180427.html Once his football career was finished, Gault embraced Masters track. No older man has ever been faster. He holds world records in the 100 meters in three age groups (10.72 seconds in 45-and-older; 10.88 in 50-and-older, and 11.30 in 55-and-older). He's a little gray on top but still lean and muscular. He still has a smooth, powerful stride. He won the 100 meters on Friday in 11.83 seconds, a slow time by his standards.
Yeah, I don't think 60 was Willie Gault's race. You can see in that video that I posted how he starts behind then all of a sudden he's pulling ahead in the last 40 yards. The 60 yd dash on grass is a great race to determine football speed though.
Yeah, Gault's race was the 100 and hurdles, which was why he ran the 4x100 in the Olympics with Carl Lewis and set a record. I still remember 2 plays from Darrell Green the most : when he made himself known in the NFL by catching Dorsett from behind and another play where he almost ran down Ron Brown (another Olympic sprinter) from behind and tripped him into the endzone. Green was just silly.
