Not sure what the hell is going on... Edit: Junior CB Anthony Cook tweeted that he wasn't going to play another snap at UT. He has since deleted it. Strange.
The song lyrics are not racist. Unless Gabriel was a racist. The Eyes of Texas are upon you, All the livelong day. The Eyes of Texas are upon you, You cannot get away. Do not think you can escape them At night or early in the morn -- The Eyes of Texas are upon you Til Gabriel blows his horn.
I get it if the writer of the song and the song was racist. The case of the messenger and the message here. Charles Manson sang the Beattles Song 'Helter Skelter' and the Beattles were pissed, but they didn't remove that song cause some serial killer sang it. the other changes are doable and make sense. Was Gabriel a racist?
No big deal. We can come up with a new song. Let the players come up with something. Should be interesting.
Nice pair of pickups today in 4* DBs JD Coffey and Ishmael Ibraheem, ranked as the #1 S and #2 CB in the state respectively. Big boost for Ash.
Gonna post this in the College Football thread as well. Without a vaccine and going into the Fall, just don’t see how this is really gonna work.
I'm all for the student's right to express themselves. But if they are here on scholarship and don't want to play, can the team revoke his scholarship? If Cook, Eagles, and Mitchell don't want to play then they shouldn't get a free ride at UT. There are minority students who are against racism but not against getting a degree. Other students are paying tuition and not playing football as well. How much is left on their scholarship? just cash it out so they can get their money and allow them to go to another school or do whatever. Free up some spots for the kids who want to play. https://247sports.com/college/texas...-represent-the-University-of-Texas-148286609/ Juwan Mitchell says he isn't 'comfortable representing Texas'
They could but they won’t, not right now at least. Right or wrong, the reality is pulling their scholarship would likely do more harm than good to the program. Also reading that if they quit, the school can't award their scholarship to another student-athlete during that school year so doesn't seem like it would really do anything other than sending a message which wouldn't be perceived well in this point of time. That being said, their roster spot should be immediately replaced with a walk-on. Just hoping emotions were/are running high and Herman/CDC can get things a bit more under control. 247 is reporting that both Eagles and Cook have reported to team workouts and active in meetings which is a good sign. Mitchell on the other hand should have been let go when he entered the transfer portal in January. This was after a season in which he reportedly took a swing at a coach and then ran off the field before the Eyes after the Bowl Game.
