My niece was killed by a drunk driver from some drunk soccer mom from Kingwood. That doesn't mean that being a Soccer mom has anything to do with being a drunk driver. This is anecdote. Not data.
Listening to Trump coverage on satellite radio makes one go crazy, lose impairment, and have a higher risk of stopping at a bar, getting drunk, listening to more political talk radio, and killing someone? Shouldn't Trump then be liable for causing the syndrome?
So back to my original question, how many are acceptable? Yall have been screaming this question for the last 2 months.
I honestly don't believe this should suprise any Texan. I remember Rick Perry saying the exact same thing years ago about the labor force being strong with his reasoning behind it being undocumented labor in construction/elsewhere. Especially in South Texas where we depend on our trade for the unbridled breath of freedom and children having a better life in exchange for manual labor jobs. I will never look an undocumented human wanting a better life for their family and working hard to be labeled as a criminal. People putting specific events that were perpetrated by undocumented people as reasons to not want them in the country are one, stupid. And two, stupid. Putting blame on an entire group of people based on actions of few is ridiculously and something that politicians do in order for them to funnel angry towards brown and black folk while they consolidate power.
Since Astrodome didn't post any actual data. Here is some data from the Cato institute. https://www.cato.org/blog/do-illegal-immigrants-increase-drunk-driving-deaths Here are their conclusions: Our results show that illegal immigrant populations are not correlated with alcohol-related traffic deaths (Table 1). For both the overall level of traffic deaths and alcohol-related deaths, we find a negative partial correlation with the state population share of illegal immigrants. Interestingly, we find that places with larger illegal immigrant shares are significantly associated with fewer per capita traffic deaths. However, this result falls out of significance after accounting for state trends. We find no significant evidence for a relationship between illegal immigrant population share and the alcohol-related drunk driving death rate. Considering Hispanic noncitizens as a proxy for likely illegal immigrants yields similar results (Table 2). We continue to find no statistically significant association with an increased risk of death through alcohol-related crashes.
Lol astrodome made this thread entertaining. Anyways this thread should be a no duh to anyone in Texas.
That Kelvin Cato link was already posted in the first page. @RayRay10 didn't summarize. Probably enjoying the slow roast.
if i remember my US history, in ~ 1986, President Ronald Reagan, father of the modern GOP party before the Trump takeover, used his executive authority to grant amnesty to selected undocumented workers and their families
Maybe I can translate for him. I think he is alluding to this argument that illegal immigrants are not supposed to be in the country at all. So every bad thing an illegal immigrant does -- each drunk driving death, each murder, each whatever -- is too much and intolerable. It isn't enough to have rates lower than the general population. Every anecdote of a death due to the actions of an illegal immigrant counts because that illegal immigrant would not have been able to cause that death if he had been barred or removed from the country earlier. Do I have that right @Astrodome?
Mostly. But I am trying to understand their viewpoint as well. I am also unsure if immigration status is documented everytime these crimes are committed.
You frequently hear drunk driving brought up regarding regulation. For example, there are far more deaths caused by drunk driving than by firearms. The problem with these argument is that drunk driving isn't legal under any situation. For this thread the answer to how many drunk driving deaths are acceptable the answer is none and we already have laws that express that. More practically though is that we have laws that we enforce regarding drunk driving. One could argue that with immigration we have laws and technically anyone here who has not gone through proper channels shouldn't be here the practical issue is we don't enforce those laws well or in very selective ways. We've had amnesty and an ongoing political debate regarding immigration. I'm not aware of any amnesty for drunk driving or any debate except where the blood alcohol percent should be for determining drunk driving. This is very much an apples to oranges comparison to compare one to the other.
No, the issue isn't drunk driving. It's the quality of life for illegal immigrants and pretending like it's all going to be OK because you've never seen how they actually live. You're encouraging slave labor and further exploitation by corporations and middle class Americans. If you want to pass laws and regulations that gives the existing ones a better life in the US, and can follow through with it, then you can open up borders, but right now you just support abuse and unsustainability.
That’s a common viewpoint. It has nothing to do with driving drunk, which is a strange way to start off. If there is a connection, it’s this: Drunk driving is unlawful and we have law against it. Illegal immigrant is also unlawful and we have law against that. Except one is encouraged for decade by the government and the private sector, and thus our economy is highly dependent on it. I have said before - bring them into the legal system and let the sectors that are dependent on them be financially responsible.
they made the choice and it’s rational for people to seek a better future.. very likely their quality of life improved or at least the anticipation of it which motivate them to try in the first place This is why it’s so much less effective to go after these individuals. Go after the people or sectors that need them and hire them is a much more effective solution. Once the public and gov sector realize and state the need publicly, then perhaps this society can have rational and thoughtful policies on supporting those needs. It can be a win win situation for all.
Our laws are out of touch with reality. As long as there is such a supply and demand issue driving immigration the market will find away. Right now that is done through the black market. If the amount of immigration we allowed in along with things like guest worker programs was closer to reality it would actually make things safer by drying up the illegal smuggling networks. We could also better keep track of who is coming here and who is in the country.
Drunk driving is even worse when you learn the driver shouldn't be in the US. Not sure why peoole here support criminals... seems an odd thing to support.
