What about not Trumps people? It's not that everybody has chosen a side and a lot of people want things to return to normal and not use a method that has ever been used to remove a president. It seems you have not actually thought this thing through.
Not even arguing that you're wrong, but how bad would the President have to be, for you personally to be wiling invoke the 25th Amendment? Where would you personally draw the line?
I . am not opposed to the 25th but IMO it needs does not need to be invoked when an election is g months away and definitely not because of the corona virus response. To invoke the 25th I think the president has to completely unable to do any duties as president. it's a moot point anyway because nobody on is cabinet would invoke the 25th. The 25th is the nuclear option IMO.
Again, playing devil's advocate here, but when you say unable to do his duties, what do you mean? Does that mean a loss of mental faculties like after having a stroke or dementia? Does that mean having the mental faculties to give a direct order that his subordinates wouldn't follow through on for whatever reasons, and thus unable to use his executive power? I'm just curious where you draw the line in the sand where even you would be willing to invoke the 25th Amendment. A declaration of war against the whole world? Video footage of him punting cute little puppies over a bridge? Shooting someone in Times Square? Where does jiggyfly draw the line?
If you had access to hydroxychloroquine, would you give that drug to your mother or father right now if they started developing symptoms? I as sure hell wouldn't. The evidence it will help is very weak, and there are potential life threatening side effects. It might have some benefit, but the side effects might cancel it (given the stress it puts on the heart). https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanrhe/article/PIIS2665-9913(20)30089-8/fulltext So yes, given how desperate and scared people are, we should be scaring people into not using this until a trial has been completed with definitive results. Given many doctors are skeptical, I am skeptical too. Keep in mind that they have tested it against other viruses and while it worked in vitro, it has not translated to success in animal or human trials.
You claimed that the FDA approved the drug, when they did not. FDA only issued an EUA, which is not any form of approval, but persistently claimed it was some form of 'approval for emergency' which is not true. As to the swedish exercise, it was initially being admistered in multiple hospital and it was not only one guy that had adverse reaction but several people, enough for them to stop admistering the drugs across all hospitals in the region. They also said there was no strong evidence that the Chloroquine was effective agaisnt Covid19, but of course you would ignore all of that and misrepresent tha facts as usual. They tried to adminsiter the drug to actual patients but the result was adverse reactions without the expected benefits. Now you mischaracterize their presentation as scaremongering simply cos it doesnt serve your purpose. - GTFO with your BS
If you are not a Trump person then common sense should prevail. The guy is a danger to the country and he is going to cost a lot of people their lives. The provision is not to be abused but should be used if the situation warrants it and it does in his case imo. This is not about politics or ideology but that he is simply unfit for the office, else how do you justify a president who touts his TV rating during a pandemic that would likely cost more than 100k deaths. Saying the method has never been used is the same stupid excuse some GOPs gave for enabling his abuse of power. If that logic persists, we would never remove a president from office no matter what he did, and then what would be the point of having the provision. Without the willingness to use the provision, we would soon find ourselves under an authoritarian regime like some less desirable countries.
Regarding using Section 4 of the 25th Amendment the language says "that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President." We need to distinguish between doing a bad job and not able to do a job. The 25th Amendment is clearly saying if the President is unable to do his job. That would mean that the President is somehow incapacitated. While many of us might feel that Trump is doing a bad job he is still doing the job. If the argument is that he is mentally unfit because he is talking about how popular he is on FB during a briefing about a national crisis I don't think would be grounds for removal if he was still doing things like signing bills and distributing resources. Even though many might feel he wasn't doing enough or even doing things in a manner that didn't seem to help much that would just be a poor job and not incapacitation. The 25th Amendment isn't the same as Impeachment as Impeachment is specifically about wrong doing in office. The 25th Amendment is about a situation like a stroke that would not kill the President but clearly in a state that he couldn't execute the office. Also the 25th Amendment has a Congressional threshhold too. Even if the VP and a majority of the Cabinet agree the President is incapacitated if the President doesn't agree then after 4 days the issue goes to Congress. Both houses of Congress would have to agree that the President is incapacitated by a 2/3 majority vote for the President to be removed. With Impeachment only the Senate has to agree by a 2/3 vote while the House by a simple majority.
That's a Republican rat-infested landmine. I'd advise any Democrat to stay away from it, and unify messaging for November (quit while you're ahead Bernie before people blame the low turnout on you...again ). You spook the Ayatollah with talk of sanctions, turn the "moderate" crowd against you.
I never thought it would ever come to a point in a national crisis, let alone a global crisis, that I would be happier not to hear from the "leader" of the free world. Has anybody ruined a television set by throwing something at it yet?
