He was well ahead of the analytic movement... before the word even existed.

I still remember plenty of people upset he wouldn’t let a pitcher go much past the 7th... now, it’s rare any pitcher gets past 6.

He probably was intimately involved in the whole thing... he probably was one of the players who likely took that info and benefited.

He coached a bad team for one year and dealt with the death of a teammate. Whether he’s lousy or not he hasn’t gotten a fair sample size. He was the first name I thought about

Except that he managed the Tigers for four years and the team performed worse every year. Same with the Angels.

Thanks to all for the update on Ausmus, as I otherwise would have thought him a natural for the job.

Now if we could just stop it with the Biggio and Bagwell talk already...

Gerry Hunsicker (69 yo) has been consulting with the Rays & Dodgers the last few years. I wonder if he would be interested in a return? Not sure he would be interested especially with the lost draft picks but he seems in line with Lunhow at least on the farm system value. I always liked Gerry and we all know Uncle Drayton screwed him over.

More than likely will be Putila and Espada... see what they can do. I wouldn’t be opposed to a coach with more managerial experience however. Hopefully our guys are motivated to show they can pull this thing off

Whoever the Astros will hire will be someone that has been approved by the commissioners office.

As far as who will be GM?

Don't sleep on Sarah Gelles. She is incredibly bright and very progressive when it comes to her job.

Pete Putila is also a strong candidate.

Kevin Goldstein likely would not move or take on that kind of work load.

You don't think they would want to bring someone in from outside the organization? Someone with no ties to the past several Astros years?

Honestly I do not know for sure. I do know that they will do whatever the commissioners office wants. That is to say if they are told to look externally they will do so. However, ask yourself this........ if you had a new franchise and were going to look at any franchise to emulate, who would it be? It would still be the Astros. They have some of the most progressive and successful people in the front office and scouting department. Accordingly, there is a real chance that Crane wants to try and keep this group going.

Also, the timing of this isn't great. The Astros can certainly seek permission to interview people from other teams but the universally accepted top candidates got jobs this winter. Maybe the Astros can try and hire someone like Jim Click with the Rays or MAYBE try to pry Josh Byrnes from the Dodgers but it would be difficult.

Personally I would try for Byrnes and if that failed hire Gelles.

That would sure as hell win a lot of PR brownie points in the we've changed tour.

    Why?

Is Manfred running the team now?

Guess he's doing everything he can to make sure his Yankees make the WS.

No the commissioner is not running the Astros. However Crane and the commissioners office have been keeping in contact as far at the proper way to proceed. So, at this point Crane is very likely to take into account any concerns that the commissioners office has about a possible replacement.

Exactly. She is very well thought of, extremely bright and she is adept at PR. She would likely win praise from the media and inside the game.

She is short on experience. She was promoted and reported directly to Luhnow. She is extremely capable but is short on negotiating, etc. The plan was for her to get more involved in the next couple years under Luhnow.

However, if the idea is to find competitive advantages, she is someone to strongly consider. She looks at situations differently than more traditional baseball people do.
