Some opinions (link, in Chinese) suggest that the causes of housing prices are more internal. And there are other political and social causes of the division. I summarized some of those opinions in another post.
There is no way the NBA can make up the loss of revenue from the PRC other than India there is no single market large enough and India isn’t as wealthy. This is truly a conflict of profit versus principle.
True there are many internal factors driving HK property prices such as internal land controls. This also predates the handover as there were some strict controls on land availability when the British ran things. I don’t think we can rule out that mainland money is a factor in The steep rise in HK property prices. It’s not the only factor and I can’t say how much of a factor. Even with one country two systems HK isn’t immune from the speculative real estate market that gripped the PRC for the last decade. PRC money has also driven up real estate prices from Vancouver to Perth. Also in situations like these where perceptions are already negative mainlanders are an easy target for HK people to blame.
It's a point I've tried to make before. Tons of companies are doing business with China and, presumably, not having their leadership teams trash China or advocate for PRC's more challenging territories. And companies doing business with the Saudis get a complete free pass from any scrutiny or criticism as well. EDIT: for those following the protests and wanting to know more the most recent This American Life radio program was fantastic.
Was Marc Stein always this dense? The obvious answer is, nobody threw a temper tantrum to get Ronald McDonald fired for violating Chinese sovereignty because a random tweet at 3 am.
Starbucks and McDonalds don’t have the same appeal or notoriety as major league sports. A regional manager for McDonalds doesn’t have same following as the GM for an NBA team.
NBA to India! Hindi would look cool on the Jerseys. Growing up Ive always been told money is the highest value in the capitalism world. I think Putin once said capitalists will sell us the rope with which they will be hanged with. If NBA can at least actually try to do this I'd be very impressed.
I've said from the very beginning, these protesters are clever but now very intelligent. The only people that could possibly defeat China are the Chinese. They should have focused on trying to get support from HK and mainland, not the western world. When u fly the American flags and bow down to the white people, burn Chinese national flags and beat up Chinese looking people into blood mess, why would they want to support you at all? The Chinese community either want the government to send in army to kill you all, or want to watch u burn HK to the ground.
The USA already stopped that in WW2......without the USA, China might have completely fallen to Japan. DD
You are wrong again. The war would take a longer to be ended, but there is no a way for China to fall to Japan. Soviet Union was behind China too.
Chinese eCommerce giant, Alibaba, listed as an ADR in the NY Stock Exchange, will launch a secondary stock offering w Hong Kong's Hang Seng exchange to raise $10 billion to $15 billion in the final week of November, in a deal that could boost the Asian financial hub as it struggles with anti-government protests. Should this come to fruition, it will be the first time that Baba's user base will be able to buy the company stock locally. previously, they had to buy ADRs from the NY Stock Exchange https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/08/boo...-billion-late-november-listing---sources.html
Even though there is less coverage the protests continue on in HK with no end in sight. With a death of a protester this week protesters are angry and motivated. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...ories-on-24th-weekend-of-unrest-idUSKBN1XK04Q
