Since the argument is currently too complicated for you, let me dumb it down to a level you can understand, so you won’t draw false parallels and confuse yourself further.

    Human rights abuse = bad

    Do you understand now?

Protests are happening constantly in the US. I mean, just watch the news once a week. The best part about this is that those people are actually still alive after, and if the protest doesn’t work, they are free to leave, AND they can afford plane tickets.

None of that is true in China.

In our country we are allowed political activism when we are not happy with our situation (incidentally that what Morey was doing with his Tweet - albeit he should've said "these views are my own and do not represent the Rockets organization" if he was acting more rationally.) Having that right is the huge difference between China and us. That is also, fundamentally, the right Hong Kong is fighting for in the last few months. It lets certain type of people who hate being tread upon, no matter the power, sleep well at night, even if they have no chance of succeeding at changing things.

Some people prefer to just tolerate/ignore injustice (especially if not directly effected) and not to stir the pot.

To each their own. US is a relative "jesus" in my book. And I agree that we should tell the world how awesome we are.

Morey ain’t going anywhere, y’all can cut that sh*t out right now

Tilman should’ve called Morey and told him to just delete the tweet

This. Morey's decision to air his personal opinions -- as right as they may be -- isn't brave when it is Tilman who has a highly leveraged multi-billion dollar investment. My guess is that the debt service on his investment is heavy. Tilman doesn't need his top guy undermining his investment.

I didn't expect to wake up to this today. Wow. I hope Morey's job is safe because i understand the economic impact this can have on the team or Tilman personally. I'm trying to stay from discussing politics on line so i wont comment amount the substance of his tweet but it is kind of weird seeing Americans refer to any countries citizens as "brain washed by propaganda". You shouldn't throw stones living in a glass house.

Hi. Long-time Rockets fan here. I am surprised that after all the years Yao has been a Rocket, as well as an exemplary person and ambassador for China, people still have such huge misunderstandings of China.

I'd like to just respond to a few common talking points for my fellow Rockets fans here, take it or leave it:

    1. "Chinese people don't REALLY know what's going on so they're blindly following their government."
    - I have been in the US for more than a decade now, knows about Tian'anmen, (which is another grossly mischaracterized event by the west.) Xinjiang, you name it. We do know the whole story and we STILL oppose the recent Hong Kong protest with passion.

    2. "I love Yao, I love Chinese people but I don't like the Chinese government."
    - If you really did love Yao and the Chinese people, you'd have to at least respect their opinion of their government. An overwhelming majority of Chinese people love their government and what it has done for the country, despite its flaws. To dismiss that is disrespectful and rude.

    3. "Hong Kong people are fighting for their democracy and freedom"
    - I probably don't have to tell you that HK is part of China. But I do have to tell you that HK has enjoyed the most freedom and prosperity under China. If you really cared, go read about the origin of the protest, the details of the extradition law, and analyze the whole situation with a calmer mind. You'd realize that the whole protest is based on made-up fears and some of them are nothing but a bunch of unreasonable, uneducated, law-breaking rioters. These aren't the people you want to be supporting

    4. "Morey has the right to freedom of speech, and he doesn't speak for the Rockets, why are Chinese people getting so butthurt?"
    - I've been a die-hard Rockets fan since Yao joined. I stuck by the Rockets when they were in the 9th seed limbo during 09-12 while others moved on to cheer for stronger teams. I cheered Morey's genius when he traded for James Harden. I am EMOTIONALLY INVESTED in this team. So when Morey tweets an image that supports riots who protect murderers and disrespects the country that Yao comes from, it hurts. It hurts because I trusted Morey to be smart enough to see through the myths and now I feel that I misjudged him. It hurts because the whole premise of me and a lot of other Chinese people being a Rockets fan is because of the connection the Rockets have with China, and Morey is a big part of that connection. So while he does not speak for the Rockets, it makes it hard for us to support a team whose general manager has views that are fundamentally hurtful, misleading, and wrong.

    Conclusion:

We're all here because we are Rockets fans. I am sure many of you agree that Yao has been such a positive person for the team and for the city of Houston. Like Yao, lots of Chinese people are kind-hearted and smart, and they are not "blinded by the Chinese government" as the west likes to imagine. All I ask, on behalf of all the Chinese Rockets fans, is that you do a little more due diligence before you speak out against China or for the HK riots, as it does have an impact on all of us.

Some things are just more important than money. More important than sport fandom.

I’ve been to mainland a number of times. Considered moving there myself. I support multiple missionaries there. Met with one yesterday who has lived there for 20 years now and has decided next year he will have to leave because it’s become too hard and dangerous to be there.

China has become increasingly concerned about western influence in all areas and sectors. Control over values and way of thinking has been and continues to be even more so now, the way the government must operate in order to maintain stability over such a large population.

The majority will believe what they’re fed in media, just like in the US and any other sovereign nation. That’s why freedom of press is vital for a free nation for the people. But don’t be fooled....I’ve been supporting the underground church for years....most wont say it bc they’ll get tossed in prison....but they know the government holds a lock on free thinking.

You might not like what Morey has to say, but he ain’t lying and he clearly thinks it was important enough to say, even if only for a few minutes in Twitter sphere. Some things are more important than even money, even sports, even country.

Dude you guys get Tilman and Les mixed up

Les is the one who has his money tied to China.
Tilman made his money in cheap casinos and chain restaurants.

none of these places Chinese tourists would want to go to.

I respect Morey’s opinion. And I can understand the owner’s action.

What I hate is how people are comment happy in what they know so little about. I lived in Hong Kong for three years, and yet I know so little about what’s really behind the demonstrations, even though I consider myself fairly well informed.

And I’m sure you are unbiased if your opinion is based on the US press alone

Morey can say whatever he wants and so can anyone on the team . Harden was dating that Fat Kardasian, does that mean people who hate the Kardasian show is going to immediately relate that to the entire Rockets team ? No

also don’t underestimate how worldly Rockets fans are . We have been all over the world.
there has been tension between mainlanders and Hong Kong people for along time.

even in Macau they limit visits for mainlanders but they don’t for Hong Kong residents.

I’m not saying all of this is right. I’m just saying that we don’t think collectively or related one person’s opinions to everyone else’s.

Rockets was the home of millions of chinese fans since 2002 even when yao retired. The house has collapsed now。
