It's the only time Americans say something in the day of month format.

    Valentine's day
    Memorial day
    Father's day
4th of July (not July 4th)
    Labor Day
    September 11th
    Christmas

Because many of the other, newer holidays don't fall on the same date every year.

It would be nice if it did not either. Something like the 1st Friday of July.

Because that could be considered offensive to British ex-pats living here.

    It is officially Independence Day.

I think most people don't call it that because they can't spell it, aren't sure what it means, don't give a rats butt about the historical significance, etc. It's 4th of July so we all know when we get to take off work and eat burgers, drink beer and wear something with a flag on it and say Murica.

Maybe because it's a colloquial euphemism that's been casually used for centuries?

20th Century Fox copyrighted the phrase "Independence Day" in 1996, so now it can't be used without Disney's permission.

we are seeing the once again attempted birth of a new movement for the Anti SJW Warriors. Just like the war on Christmas, we have The war on our Independence Day. just joking OP, but I went out to eat the other day, the couple sitting next to me were having this very discussion and getting upset about it -"I've always said Happy Independence Day"
