I agree. Ballplayers are notorious for not staying somewhere that they feel cheated. No way does he stay in Houston next season if he feels that way, even if he moves on to another team less successful. Capela's best opportunity to succeed and play for another big contract in 4+ years is with Houston. He should know that. But he also knows he has Houston by the balls since the front court defense left. 4/80 should do it. Capela's camp won't be happy at first but he won't get more than that as a FA and he'd waste a year playing for under $5 mil. I do feel Capela already saw the dollar signs though in the $25 mil range, so it just takes some time to get him and his agent to understand that $20 mil is still a great deal for him.
that's the other thing, i fear capela being mad and not playing hard if he only signs the QO, but on the other hand, the dude just threw 70 million in the trash and he wants as much money as possible so being a malcontent who starts getting benched isn't going to get that 100 million back. he should play his heart out for us. also, you never know when perception will change. IT went from mvp candidate to scrounging for minimum contracts when people figured out he couldn't play defense and might be a bit slower now with the injury. what if someone else on the rockets starts looking like a reasonable facsimile of capela getting dunks and layups all over the place on PnR's and people think capela is nothing special and decide he can have 4/40 if he likes it? again, i think capela is an amazing PnR guy and can switch on D so i want fertitta to stop making this the worst offseason ever and pay capela his money. but capela doesn't have a ton of leverage as far as hurting us next year unless he wants to cut off his nose to spite his face.
Nobody on our roster or g league roster can replace what Capela does or how he does it. He is really good at catching and finishing. His footwork is so damn coordinated. How many big men can catch a ball full stride on a break and euro step a defender? Not many. I wouldnt mind him on the 4/80 deal.
Wow lol. Capela is a good player but he's nowhere near worth as much as that. He's a role player for Gods sake. Dude can't even get his own shot. We're already screwed with Anderson. Our window with a healthy CP3 is closing fast with our 2 best wing defenders gone and the Warriors still existing. Who will guard Lebron, KD, Kawhi, Klay, Paul George, Butler, Booker, CJ, Ingram, Kuzma, etc..??? LeBron will probably stretch the floor a lot this season with LA. Can a $100 million Capela win a matchup vs 'Bron? Capela wouldn't be anything without Harden and CP feeding him every game. He didn't even play over 30mpg last season.
No one is saying he’s overrated. Capela is clearly a very good player and if the market conditions were different a la summer 16 he probably would have received a max type offer coming off the year he just had, look at Parsons for godsake. However, the current market is dry, money is tight, and teams with the cap space to sign him either dont need him, nor values him enough to invest max dollars. The Rockets are offering him a very fair deal if the 4 years, 60 million dollar offer is true. Capela might feel slighted by that, but it’s a matter of perspective. Before the cap spike 15 mil was close to max money for someone coming off their rookie scale contract/his number of years in the league... so maybe he should consider that since a. it was only two years ago and b. the non great players making obscene amounts of money from that summer just happened to be the ones who were in the right place at the right time.
no doubt. i said as much in some other thread. his combination of great hands in traffic, unbelievable footwork like the euro step or just using his 2 steps wisely, and ability to catch, set, and put up a flip shot when a defender initially stops him is practically unrivaled among PnR bigs. and he can hit the corner 3 guy. and the guy blocks shots and rebounds and switches and doesn't demand post-ups. he's basically perfect for the modern day. now he only played 24 mpg against the warriors i believe so we can't spend $25M on a guy who plays half the game for one position against the only team that matters, but i want clint back a lot. and since it's just tilman's checkbook that would prevent it, we better bring him back.
capela isn't worth $20m per, let alone $25m.... name one thing he does offensively that isn't completely facilitated by HOF guard play? now obviously he has a strong case to make that his D and skill set suites our team well and that certainly gives him some leverage but in a market where he received exactly zero offers the rockets would be insane to throw that kind of money at him. just bc OKC vastly overpaid for adams doesn't mean we have to do the same for capela. if he's expecting that kind of loot i let him sign the QO and focus on shedding him and anderson for another impact player.
Capela at 4yrs 60/80/100 million or Javale McGee at the minimum? Would be a mistake to keep Capela at this price. Just give him the QO and go after McGee next year.
As long as Ryan Anderson is on the team with that salary, Rockets talk of "worth" takes a hit. Every Rockets free agent will look at what Anderson did last year and what he made and also what he will be making for next two years. If you can afford to pay that scrub that did nothing 20M per year, you better get your checkbook to pay me.
Da heck is wrong with the people responding in this thread like this. Capela played his heart out for the team and has proven to be one of the best centers in the league at what he does. After an amazing season, he's trying to get his (just like every other starter on this team has) and you guys respond and like trashy response like this? gtfo here
Yup. Folks dont realize how much Capela helps Hardens game as well. You will realize his importance if/once he is gone.
Its only 17 mil which would put him closer to the league average salary for a starting center. It would be a good deal for the rockets.
