Senate panel agrees with intel community that Putin was trying to help Trump By Jeremy Herb, CNN Updated 2208 GMT (0608 HKT) July 3, 2018 (CNN)Breaking with their House Republican counterparts, the Senate Intelligence Committee said Tuesday that the intelligence community properly concluded in January of last year that Russian President Vladimir Putin was trying to help Donald Trump when Moscow meddled in the 2016 election. The Senate panel released a summary Tuesday of its examination of the intelligence community's January 2017 assessment, which laid out the case of Russia's election meddling and concluded that Putin was trying to help Trump win. The Senate report said that the intelligence community's assessment of Russia's intentions were sound, which is at odds with the House Intelligence Committee Republicans' report that found "significant intelligence tradecraft failings" in the assessment of Putin's objectives. "The Committee has spent the last 16 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft and analytic work underpinning the Intelligence Community Assessment and sees no reason to dispute the conclusions," Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr said in a statement, reiterating what he had initially said in May. The unclassified summary released on Tuesday provides details on why the Senate Intelligence Committee agreed with the intelligence community that Russia was trying to help Trump and hurt Hillary Clinton's campaign. The conclusion has been affirmed by Trump's entire national security team, but the President himself has repeatedly refused to state that Russia was meddling to help him. "Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election!" Trump tweeted last week. Trump's assertion was given a boost in March by the House Intelligence Committee Republicans, who also stated in their report that they had no evidence of collusion between members of Trump's team and Russian officials. The House committee wrote that it "identified significant intelligence tradecraft failings that undermine confidence in the ICA (Intelligence Community Assessment) judgments regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin's strategic objectives for disrupting the U.S. election." Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee charged that the Republican investigation was intended to help protect Trump, not uncover collusion, and they have questioned the Republicans' findings about the intelligence community report. The Senate Intelligence Committee reached a different conclusion that has bipartisan support, which found that the assessment was "a sound intelligence product." The committee said that the intelligence community assessment relied on public Russian leadership commentary, Russian state media reports, public examples where Russian interests aligned with US candidate policy statements, and "a body of intelligence reporting to support the assessment that Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for Trump." The Senate summary noted there were different confidence levels between the National Security Agency and the CIA and FBI about whether Putin and the Russian government were aspiring to help Trump; the CIA and FBI assessed with "high confidence" and the NSA with "moderate confidence." But the committee wrote that its examination found that "the analytical disagreement was reasonable, transparent, and openly debated among the agencies and analysts, with analysts, managers, and agency heads on both sides of the confidence level articulately justifying their positions." "In all the interviews of those who drafted and prepared the ICA, the committee heard consistently that analysts were under no politically motivated pressure to reach any conclusions," the committee wrote. "All analysts expressed that they were free to debate, object to content, and assess confidence levels, as is normal and proper for the analytic process." https://edition.cnn.com/2018/07/03/politics/senate-intelligence-putin-donald-trump/index.html
At this point everyone that isn’t completely biased knows the House Committee report is a joke and everyone knows Putin aided Trump’s election campaign. What we don’t know yet is if the President knowingly received help from Putin.
They didn't make any breaking news with their finding, but they did prove they are more capable than the House committee. They upheld some of their credibility at this point.
There is knowing and there is conspiring. Trump knew the Russians were helping him after he won the Republican nomination and started to receive intelligence briefings. Of course that did not stop Trump from claiming a 400 lb man living in his mom's basement was responsible.
This is a big deal. It's the Senate Intelligence Committee, led by Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, a senior member of the Republican majority. We have been hearing constant declarations for many months that the Russians had nothing to do with trump's "victory" in 2016. Declarations from trump, from those surrounding him, including his press secretary, various talking heads on Fox and from the more extreme online sources, and from several members here. They all claimed that the 17 intelligence bodies of the US government were not to be believed when they said that the Russians interfered with the 2016 national election, not to be believed, or that there was a lack of "proof." That it was nonsense, simply ridiculous that the Russians had anything to do with it. Now you have the Senate committee who's purview encompasses just these kinds of issues examining the claims and declaring that yes, the Russians did interfere with those elections. How much proof do you need? Those who claim it's all "business as usual" simply must be joking. Where is the outrage that the Russians would dare to do such a thing? Where is the outrage at the lack of action by trump and those he has appointed to prevent it from happening again? We have had senior members of our military say before Congress that they have been given no guidance from the White House. Why? Where is the patriotism and love of country on this 4th of July in the face of an attack by Vladimir Putin of Russia on our democracy, our system of government? What has happened to the patriots from the Right? Why have they disappeared? Don't you care about your country?
Democrats clinging to Trump won the election because of Russia is gonna guarantee a 2020 victory. Again the only people who read Hilary's hacked emails weren't voting for her anyway
trump supporters will find any reason to excuse and enable trump's involvement with russian meddling with our democratic processes...
Has there been any actual proof about "Trump's involvement with Russian meddling with our democratic processes" or did you think you'd just get away with making the baseless claim?
Why are we kicking this story around? I thought we had a 1000 page thread for this? Yes, we know Russia was not unbiased in our election. We know Putin hated Hillary more than most conservatives in America and supported Trump. Im not sure why we go round and round about this topic other than to keep the narrative alive. Its like some people are senile and relive this over and over again as if its news each time they read about it.
The chief executive may be old and senile but his denials on this exact topic, and the copious lying of his subordinates on this very topic, is a big reason it's news. What % of Fox and Friends viewers do you imagine accept the fact that Russia tried to assist Trump when they meddled?
One, the president of the United States continues to claim otherwise. And second, the (russian) house intelligence committee didn't offer this conclusion, so the Senate report is very newsworthy. You don't find this newsworthy?
had you venture out ur cave, you'd have known that the Rep-led House committee, led by the Trump Chump Nunez, has been dismissive of Russian meddling of the 2016. This senate committee was also led by a Republican, Burr, who along w his team put forth a genuine effort to investigation the allegation. juxtaposition this Senate conclusion/report w Nunez's, one can only conclude what an half-azzed job Nunez did
And what about all the other BS narratives Russian trolls pushed that helped support Trump’s nationalist narrative? Those didn’t matter? We are finding out that same Russian mechanism had a hand in Brexit. Do you just prefer being lied to and being used? Or is your conservative make believe narrative just that much more appealing?
