Hinch doesn't like to call up new position players just to sit so I'm hoping he sees Jake as just a late defensive substitution for J.D. Davis.
No. Clearly you don’t. What i am saying is that we have better alternatives. We know what jake brings and its not enough.
Better alternatives to be an extra outfielder like whom? They aren't going to make a 40 man move for an 8 day DL stint dude.
Who do you cut and who do you add to the 40-man to make this happen? I'm fairly certain we understand things.
What is your point? Can only call up guys on the 40 man roster and he’s the only available option with Reddick and Fisher on the DL.
Lineup Locks (9) Springer Bregman Altuve Correa Gurriel Reddick McCann Stassi Marwin Lineup On The Fringe Davis Kemp Marisnick Fisher Gattis White Pitching Locks (12) Verlander Cole Morton McCullers Keuchel Peacock McHugh Devenski Harris Rondon Smith Giles Pitching on the Fringe Sipp Hoyt After looking at this, a few things come to mind: 1) If there was ever a year to carry 12 vs 13 pitchers on the roster, this is the year. Our starters are going deep, we have 2 high caliber starting pitchers coming out of the pen plus plenty of other quality arms. The problem? The most obvious candidate to cut, Sipp, has actually been fantastic against lefties allowing just .059/.059/.059/.118. Unfortunately, he's completely unplayable against righties. Not sure what you do here, since if we are looking for a lefty specialist at a reasonable price...that guy is already on our staff. With the lefty heavy lineup the Indians have, this might be the time to check the pulse on Sipp. If he stumbles, then you cut him and move on. 2) Assuming we aren't going to trim down to 12 pitchers, that leaves just 12 spots to allocate to the lineup, 9 of which are occupied by players that will not be released, traded or sent down. The remaining 3 spots will be battled out between the following: Davis, Kemp, Marisnick, Fisher, Gattis and White. Here's how that should play out: - Defensive Outfielder: You absolutely need this at the right moments in a tight game. The ability to play an outfield of Reddick, Marisnick and Springer to help keep a lead is too important to overlook. Plus Marisnick gives you speed on the bases. Assuming he can get to north of .200, he's almost guaranteed a spot. - Offensive Outfielder: With Marwin and Fishers struggles, I don't like the idea of being forced to start one of Marwin, Fisher or Marisnick in the outfield. Marwin still gives you positional versatility, and as already discussed, we need Marisnicks glove and speed. The final spot in the outfield comes down to Fisher or Kemp. As long as Kemp continues to rake and show good plate discipline, he has to get the nod. Fisher still has potential, but he's now had a spring training and 2 months of a season to get going. - DH/Infielder: This will be between Gattis, Davis and White. Davis might be the best fielder of the 3, but I don't think that will factor heavily in here, since none would start in our current infield and Marwin would be the utility guy to fill in. This is strictly about the bat. I have no idea how this shakes out. Gattis is playing better after a horrific start, but he's still a below average DH. BOTH Davis and White deserve a chance. Just my guess, but I think the Astros arent unhappy that both Reddick and Fisher are on the DL. It allows them to make a decision on Sipp after going through a lefty heavy lineup in Cleveland, see what they have in Davis and Kemp, and track Gattis. If Sipp doesn't play well, then you go to 12 pitchers and keep all of Kemp, Gattis and Davis up (Fisher goes down). If Sipp does play well, then it likely comes down to DFAing Gattis or sending Davis back down.
They aren't ditching Sipp. Lefties are 1 for 17 against him. Plus, the Astros are allergic to eating salary. When Reddick comes back I expect JD Davis or Marisnick to get sent down. Fisher will either get sent to the minors or replace whomever is left between Davis or Marisnick IF they are struggling.
Good summary. Not sure I'd put Marwin and Stassi as locks. I'd have them as near locks as I'm expecting a crazy deadline.
My guess at chance of Astros 40 man roster players getting traded: 0% : Verlander, Cole, Morton, McCullers, Keuchel, Devenski, Harris, Rondon, Giles, McCann, Altuve, Bregman, Correa, Gurriel, Marwin, Reddick, Springer 1%: McHugh, Peacock, Rodgers, Boshers, Smith 10%: Sipp, Guduan, Gustave, Hoyt, Stassi, Gattis, White, Marisnick, Kemp, C Perez 20%: Martes, Paulino, Davis, Reed, Fisher
Most of that 10% group is meh one way or another. They're current (and probable future) non-core pieces who individually aren't bringing back more than a reliever or expiring bat. That 20% group I don't think the likelihood is nearly that high across the board. Martes, Paulino, and Fisher are obvious low-sells right now. I don't see why the Astros would want to sell low or why'd an acquiring team would want to pick up such distressed assets. Sit on them for a season and see if they bounce back. Davis is actually a very curious case. I'd argue he has more value to the Astros than any other team. They're about to be short in well-hitting, early team control bats. If he can cycle into the DH/LF/3B rotations he can provide as much value to the Astros as he could on another team. Flip side is he's not particularly high ceiling either, and teams are increasingly willing to see what their own guys can do with a swing tweak here or there --> so its tough to see an acquiring team giving up enough to make it worth it.
Jake is in there again today while Kemp sits He has pics on somebody. Zero reason for him to be starting again
He looked so good in his first game back. Driving a ball out, fighting off some pitches, and actually putting the ball in play with 2 strikes. I had hoped maybe the demotion worked. But yesterday he was right back to that inept, non competitive bulls**t.
