My trust-level for Giles is Wagner... Billy is obviously more proven/better in the regular season, but we already KNOW he sucked playoffs. Lidge is his next standard for best Astros closer I've witnessed.
it's even worse in other threads, if I remember right. I think there was a particular game series thread that went off the deep end on him
Here comes the circle jerk again. Same usual suspects. Yall act like Giles wasnt shaky earlier in the year with no fastball command. A bump like this is equivalent to an annoying 'I told you so' because it happens to fall in line with a narrative at the moment. Happened earlier this year and now happening again. I dont think any Astros fan on here isnt happy to see Giles dominate and succeed like he has been in this stretch. That who we traded for, but its foolish not to admit he wasnt looking like the guy we traded for for awhile. Carry on.... I still suggest the fappening thread in the hangout, but to each their own.
Oh trust me, I take no pleasure in seeing people jerk it to the wrong things, let alone jerking it to anything.
Totally right that he was inconsistent earlier (i wouldn't characterize it as shaky, but i get the description). I thought then, and think now, that it was silly to take some inconsistencies and extrapolate to "we must trade for an elite closer" and "we can't win a WS with Giles closing" and "Devo/Harris should be closer". That's the funny and silly stuff. Saying he was inconsistent and needed to improve? I think we were all on that same page--though I think some thought much more time/leeway was warranted given the variability of samples involved in relief pitching + past success + his overall stuff.
I think Donkey has valid points. There was a reason why there were concerns on Giles. That said I think every Astro fan is happy as hell to see him gaining confidence as the season has progressed and more importantly getting his control more consistent.
I trust him. He needed to have an almost year-long stretch of excellent play (in my opinion) to shake off the doubts, and he has. Therefore, I trust him. (This is coming from someone who bashed Giles relentlessly early in the year)
Pitchers will give up runs. Closers will blow saves. That's just baseball. Like every player, Giles makes occasional mistakes. Statistically, he's a top 5 closer this year. I trust Giles as much as I do any of our other pitchers. Seriously...if you can't trust Giles, who do you trust? Giles' numbers are in line with--or better than--nearly every single closer outside of Kenley Jansen. If you don't trust Giles, or he really bothers you to your core, I'd humbly suggest that you choose another sport to watch besides baseball. Or you can take up Phillies baseball and watch Appel, VV, and co. Sidenote: thank god we threw in Appel instead of Fisher. Was not happy when we did that
