So if I'm reading Tellit's last post right and Martin, Paps, and Serrano sign for slot, that would leave 5.68 million to sign Bukauskas without losing future draft picks (i.e. not going over bonus pool by more than 5%).
Right, except Serrano has made it clear that he's not going to sign for slot. Also, Perez has a deal, but he isn't signing it until Bukauskas signs his.
There must be something our scouts absolutely love with him. Not only did we seemingly overdraft him (based on mocks, which are admittedly useless) we went fairly significantly over slot to sign him... and all of this on a guy coming off of TJ. Color me intrigued.
Yeah, that's....bizarre. I'm sure they were well aware of his cost before the pick. He went well ahead of projections as well if I remember right. They must really see something they like.
Assuming that no one in rounds 11-40 have signed for over $125,000, the Astros have $5,093,700 remaining in their pool with Martin (about to sign), Bukauskas, Papierski (still in CWS), and Serrano yet to sign.
I predict Martin and Papierski sign for slot, Bukauskas gest around $4MM, and then whatever they have left goes to Serrano.
According to the head baseball coach at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, an NAIA school, RHP Carlos Pimentel has apparently signed with the Astros as an undrafted free agent. 18 appearances (6 starts, 2 complete games, pitched in a shutout), 4-5, save, 3.83 ERA, 56.1 IP, 46 H (3 HR allowed), 28 R (24 ER), 20 BB, 76 K, 1.18 WHIP, .209 opponent average
I had Joe Perez pegged as a massively underslot pick at #53. He was ranked #93 (as a pitcher). He blew out his elbow. Top prospect experts were questioning why he was picked #53. And he was picked as a 3B - the lower value skill of this 2-way player - when the smart money had him as a 5th-6th rounder if chosen as a 3B. I thought the Astros would give him 5th round bonus money and use the rest to sweeten J.B. Bukauskas' pot. J.B. Bukauskas was ranked 6th-7th and went 15th. And I kinda figured they might need to give him 6th pick money. If the Astros can get J.B. Bukauskas, Joe Perez (and Kyle Serrano) without blowing their 5% over pool limit, I am a happy camper. But I am befuddled at the leverage Joe Perez had and the Astros' willingness to go overslot to get him. They must project him as a plus plus defender with a Rafael Furcal arm (the next Ken Caminiti?) . And its not like there isn't a traffic jam at third already (Bregman blocking natural 3Bs Yuri, Moran & Davis. So I am a little befuddled.
Samesies. I've watched some video of him, short powerful swing. I'm very interested to see what he can do. Played in one of the best, if not the best areas of the country for competition and dominated so hopefully he'll be quick to develop.
Ole Miss RHP Sean Johnson signed as an undrafted free agent. 7 appearances (3 starts, pitched in a shutout), 1-1, 4.76 ERA, 17 IP, 13 H (1 HR allowed), 9 ER, 8 BB, 11 K, 1.18 WHIP, .217 opponent average He's a Colorado native who underwent Tommy John surgery and apparently broke a growth plate while he was in high school, which caused the index finger on his right hand to be shorter...
