John Stuart Mill - On Liberty

Very well stated. Succinct. Would read again.

 

I like some of what Mill has to say on the subject of liberty, but his views on economic liberty are pretty opposite my own.

John Stuart Mill is the prime example of how empire consumes its own intellectuals and make them start excusing empire.

A greatly educated academic and philosopher of his time, he remained completely unaware that Britain had taken a booming industrial giant, a country suddenly starting to rapidly progress from despair to development, and the emperors drowned it to the depths of hell economically, socially, legally and developmentally... but they could speak some English and started building schools and hospitals behind schedule. Hallelujah. What a civilized emperor.

At least they were a kinder emperor than the previous emperor, right? You wouldn't want China or Russia plunging countries into demise.

Reading John Stuart Mill should be part of American curriculum. It's a much needed lesson in how stupid empire's theories look just a few decades later.
